The Kid from Tompkinsville

thekidfromtomkinsvilleThe Kid from Tompkinsville by John R. Tunis

“Sandlot sensation becomes major league rookie! Can the kid bat and pitch his way to the pennant?” The Kid from Tompkinsville, originally published in 1940, is the first of nine novels John R. Tunis wrote about the fictional Roy Tucker, the aforementioned kid from the title, who came up from the minors to pitch for the Brooklyn Dodgers. Although sometimes simplistic , and generally considered young adult fiction, this is one of the quintessential baseball novels all baseball fans should read. I see echoes of it in films like Major League and The Natural. Grade: C+
