The Big Heat

thebigheatThe Big Heat by William P. McGivern

William McGivern wrote gritty crime novels and tv scripts. Kojak. Adam-12. That stuff. The Big Heat started out as a serial in the Saturday Evening Post, was published in 1952, and became a famous Fritz Lang film starring Glenn Ford and Gloria Grahame in 1953. This novel is good hardboiled fiction, with plenty of (according to the front cover)”hero cops, cool killers, and hot broads….”  My copy is an old Pyramid paperback from 1974; more contemporary editions probably (hopefully) have reconsidered that “hot broads” part.

I will definitely look for other McGivern novels, and there are several, hopefully not too hard to find. Grade: B

mass market paperback

Pyramid 1974
