Episode in Palmetto by Erskine Caldwell
This Caldwell novel, first published in 1950 follows the story of Vernona Stevens, a stunningly pretty and somewhat naive woman who comes to the small town of Palmetto to teach school and immediately becomes the object of romantic attention from a number of would-be suitors. The book becomes almost a how-to guide for sexual harassment, but it is representative of general attitudes toward gender issues of that time.
My copy is a New American Library Signet paperback, a first printing from January of 1953.
Not Caldwell’s finest work, somewhat dated, but still an interesting and worthwhile read. Grade: C+
