The Cunning and the Haunted

thecunningandthehauntedThe Cunning and the Haunted by Richard Jessup

The back cover of this book, published in 1954,  says “[Richard Jessup] may be one of the one of the most important new writers of our generation.” He wasn’t, but he did write a few well-received novels, the most popular of which was The Cincinnati Kid, which was made into a film starring Steve McQueen and Edward G. Robinson. The Cunning and the Haunted is set in Georgia and populated by mostly convicts and orphans. I enjoyed it, but felt the writing was a little limited or stilted. Grade: C+
