The Teahouse of the August Moon

TheteahouseoftheaugustmoonThe Teahouse of the August Moon by Vern Sneider

This book was  made into a movie, with Marlon Brando playing the part of Sakina, “wily native”, which explains why his character is so oddly lightskinned on the cover of the book.

Attitudes toward Asians when the book was first published in 1951, at least some popular attitudes represented in books, were not especially openminded. This book manages to both amuse and annoy all at once. Written with real humor, it is still clearly a product of a particular time in our history, when westernizing Eastern countries (here Okinawa) and spreading the joys of our culture and attitudes, was a way to save the world.
