PT 109

PT 109: John Kennedy in World War Two by Robert J. Donovan

This book contains “the first complete, authorized account of the President’s wartime adventures.” This is a movie tie-in paperback, and on the back cover appears a young, dapper Cliff Robertson as young Lt. Kennedy. First published in 1961, presumably as propaganda to help elect Kennedy, PT 109 provides great detail about how Kennedy’s heroics in the Solomon Islands helped save most of his crew after a Japanese destroyer rammed his boat, breaking it in half. The survivors washed ashore on a deserted island, natives find them, they get rescued, etc etc.

This is a small piece of history, but Kennedy was genuinely a hero, if the book is accurate. Grade: C.
